Zotero for Linux

Collect, organize, cite, and share research

Overview

Zotero is a free and easy-to-use tool for Linux that helps you collect, organize, cite, and share research sources.

It is designed for users who want a reliable way to manage their research materials without complicated steps.

This app fits well within the Office category and works on Linux systems.

Please note that this version of Zotero is a wrapper and is not officially verified, affiliated with, or supported by the original Zotero project.

If you find any problems, make sure they also happen with the official Zotero tarball before reporting them in the Zotero Forums.

For security, Zotero needs access to your home directory by default.

This allows it to save data and keep your research organized.

However, if you are concerned about privacy, you can remove the home directory permission safely.

To do this, first move the folders named “~/.zotero” and “~/Zotero” into the app’s safe area, usually found at “~/.var/app/org.zotero.Zotero/”.

After moving the folders, remove the home access permission using tools like Flatseal, Plasma settings, or the command line with: `flatpak override --user --nofilesystem=home org.zotero.Zotero` Then, restart Zotero.

Keep in mind that if you turn off home access, the drag and drop feature may stop working.

Instead, use the file chooser to add files.

If you want to keep drag and drop, you must give permission to specific folders by running: `flatpak override --user --filesystem=/PATH/TO/DragAndDrop org.zotero.Zotero` Also, if your Zotero data folder is outside your home directory, you must grant access to that folder with: `flatpak override --user --filesystem=/PATH/TO/ZOTEROFOLDER org.zotero.Zotero` In summary, Zotero for Linux is a useful tool for managing research sources safely, but it needs some permission settings to work properly.

It supports drag and drop and offers clear guidance on how to manage security and file access.

Pros

  • Free and easy-to-use tool for collecting, organizing, citing, and sharing research sources.
