Obsidian for Linux

Markdown-based knowledge base

Overview

Obsidian is a knowledge base app designed for Linux users who want to organize information using plain text Markdown files.

It supports CommonMark and GitHub Flavored Markdown, which are popular text formats for writing notes.

You can add tags, LaTeX math formulas, diagrams created with mermaid, footnotes, and internal links to connect your notes easily.

One useful feature is the interactive graph view, where you can see and explore relationships between your notes.

Obsidian works from a local folder on your computer, so your data stays under your control.

It includes over 20 plugins that let you add more features if you want.

For users who need online access, there is an optional paid hosting service available.

Personal use of Obsidian is free with no account needed, but businesses must buy a license.

If you want early access to new updates, you can buy a Catalyst license.

This Linux version is available as a Flatpak and is verified by Obsidian’s team.

Keep in mind, support for Wayland display server is experimental and might cause problems such as pen tablet issues or display glitches.

You can toggle Wayland support on or off using Flatseal.

Also, GPU acceleration can be disabled if needed.

Since updates are managed by Flatpak, users should turn off Obsidian’s automatic updates unless using insider versions.

The Git plugin requires special permissions, including access to SSH authentication and your home directory, which might raise some security concerns.

If you don’t use the Git plugin, you can disable those permissions to keep your system safer.

Overall, Obsidian offers a secure and flexible environment for building a personal Markdown-based knowledge base on Linux.
