Doom BFA for Linux

Doom BFA is a source port of Doom 3 BFG Edition designed for Linux.

It is based on the RBDoom3BFG project and is offered as a special Flatpak edition.

This version includes all the original features of Doom 3 BFG Edition and adds some improvements for a smoother experience on Flatpak systems.

The software comes with both the game engine and a launcher bundled together.

You can open the launcher either through a shortcut in your desktop’s context menu or by using the "-open-launcher" command.

Both the engine and launcher automatically look for your game folder on your system.

If the engine starts using the wrong game files, you can choose the correct folder with the launcher.

Doom BFA supports installing Open Platform files to add new features.

To do this, place the Open Platform ".so" file in the game folder or the save folder at "~/.var/app/io.github.maddecoder.Classic-RBDOOM-3-BFG/data/.doombfa".

The companion ".so" file should go in the "base/lib" folder inside that directory, along with any extra files needed.

There are some known issues when using Doom BFA with Steam.

The game might get stuck in a “playing” state after installing Open Platform, which can be fixed by restarting the Steam client.

Sometimes the engine fails to start after adding Open Platform with Steam.

Limiting access to the Wayland socket in Flatpak permissions can help.

When loading mods that create custom new game entries, the entries may not appear unless you restart the engine.

Doom BFA is useful for Linux gamers who want to play Doom 3 BFG Edition with added flexibility and Flatpak support, but it requires careful management of mods and Steam integration to avoid bugs.
