Bouncer for Linux

Keep the riffraff out!

Overview

Bouncer is a Linux tool that helps you set the right firewall zone when you connect to wireless networks.

It asks you to choose the type of network you are on, such as home, public, or work.

After you pick a network type, Bouncer remembers it and uses that setting automatically the next time you connect.

This software works best with NetworkManager and firewalld, which are systems that manage your network and firewall rules.

If your Linux setup does not use these, Bouncer will not work.

Fedora Linux includes both NetworkManager and firewalld by default, so Bouncer works well there without extra steps.

For other Linux distributions like Ubuntu or Debian, you need to install firewalld and remove ufw if it’s installed, because ufw conflicts with firewalld.

On Ubuntu and Debian, some extra setup is needed to allow regular users to change network zones.

This usually means adding your user to the netdev group with a command like `usermod -a -G netdev username`.

Another option is to change polkit rules, but that requires more advanced knowledge.

After setting up, start Bouncer once manually to enable it to start automatically at login.

Bouncer is useful for people who want a safer network by automatically applying the right firewall rules based on the type of Wi-Fi network they connect to.

It fits well with Fedora and Linux users willing to do some setup on other systems.
